Will It Hurt?

If you are thinking of needles such as those used in injections and blood tests, don't! Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to these.

The needles are much finer and are solid rather than hollow. When inserted, the sensation is often described as a slight tingling or dull ache. Needles are inserted either for a second or two, or may be left in place for 30 minutes or more.

During treatment, patients commonly experience a heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced sense of overall well being.

Acupuncture In Britain

Acupuncture started to become popular in Britain during the late 50's and early 60's. Since then the number of qualified acupuncturists registered with The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) has grown to over 2500 by the year 2004.

Initial Consultation

The acupuncturist will assess your general health and well being to identify the underlying problems before starting any treatments. The initial consultation will usually be followed by a treatment and you will be charged for this.

Treatment

The human body has around 500 acupuncture points, and a fully trained acupuncturist will use a selection of these, perhaps ten or twelve for each treatment. It is quite usual that, during a course of treatment, different points will be selected as the patients condition changes.
